The best size to use is the stock size, although some people
like to go coarse (UNC) instead of
fine thread (UNF). They are 5/16" UNF studs if they are stock. There is
not enough meat in the
trailing arm casting to go much larger than the stock size, and if you
go up in size then
you need to drill the hub, etc. Messy.
UNC studs are stronger when inserted into aluminum. This is one
place the Triumph Engineers
messed up, was clinging to goofy notion that fine threads were
acceptable in Aluminum (Like the
engine bridge pieces that invariably are stripped. Doh!)
As far as purchasing them, Moss and others carry them. If you
want stock type studs, you
pretty much must go through one of the big three. The reason is that for
a fine threaded stud,
the readily available ones are "manifold" studs, which are UNC on one
end, and UNF on the other.
The stock design is UNF over the entire length. For that type, the
easiest way is to get a
5/16" UNF bolt, and use a Dremel to cut off the head. Otherwise you will
be ordering them.
You may be able to find a fastener store that carries UNF studs,
but I was not able to
when I tried 2 different hardware stores and 2 different auto parts
stores.
