Hmmm,
let's see. $5 for some mineral spirits, $3 for some wax. We all have some
light machine oil just kicking around, but let's figure $1 for that
component. Then we'll splurge for a heater element and a pot to mix it in.
Figure $30. So $40 total.
Then we wind up heating things a tad too much while we read our 6pack
e-mail in the other room and the thing bursts into flames. The kitchen is
destroyed and the smoke damage through the rest of the house is extensive.
Let's figure a conservative damage estimate of $100k.
Note: we're heating this concoction in the kitchen because we don't want
my precious TR6 to get damaged in the unlikely event of fire.
Sounds pretty good to me.
NOT.
This reminds of the term "voodoo economics".
It looks like a Waxoyl starter kit is about $50. I have no idea how much
car you can cover with 2.5 liters, but I can't imagine that the materials
cost would be much over $100. I do understand that the process is messy.
Howeverm I have also seen this stuff installed by a professional, and
truth be told - with the right tools it's not messy at all!
Oh well.
Regarding oil _in_ the frame. I had a repair done to my street TR6 years
ago and the shop did this _BODGE_. The car _STUNK_ for about two years and
when the frame needed some more work on it, I waited becuase I was
concerned about the oil catching fire from the heat. Of course Waxoyl is
probably flammable in that case too but at least it doesn't STINK.
