Nick---There should be no "free play" in the pushrod at the SC. The
clutch return mechanism should push the clutches actuating arm back to a
vertical position, removing all play at the pushrod. You may have to
give the cluch pedal a pump or two to get the piston inside the SC down
to where it makes firm contact between the pushrod and the arm. Similar
in principle to the way the front disc brakes work when the pads are
pushed back, fluid must then be pumped in, to fill up the mechanical
void.

It is "normal" for the clutch pedal to move a little before you feel
resistance in the MC. Just be sure there is very little play at the
clevis pin and MC pushrod. (If you are indeed getting 5/8 inch of travel
at the SC, that's more than most of us.
