John-The pinion seal is available from bearing suppliers. The # is CR 15207
and is not leather, which is ironic because CR stands for Chicago Rawhide.
The price is about what the "big 3" charge. One other thought comes to mind.
Your '76 diff. uses a collaspsible spacer for the pinion bearing preload,
which is supposed to be replaced whenever the pinion nut is loosened. This
would require the whole unit to be disassembled, which is major surgery. Has
anyone replaced a pinion seal without replacing the spacer ? The solid spacer
diff can be identified by the type of pinion nut used, castellated with
cotter pin, wheras a nylock nut is used with the collaspsible spacer.
