Thermostats and low temperature

Well it's apparent everyone's got their TR's out on the road (or want to be
on the road) with the numerous emails poping up now that's it's Spring.

Here's my question - I've had my 1976 TR6 for four years and it runs find.
One item that has bothered me is the temperature gauge just gets beyond the
first 'mark' in the dial and stays there. Last summer, when I was sitting
in St. Louis summer traffic is actually moved up two marks but it' s normal
state is sitting 'just a frog's hair' off the first mark. I changed out the
thermostat and the gauge reading stayed the same. I'm reading (How to
Restore British Sports Cars) that an overcooled engine is not a good thing,
less power, worse gas mileage and shorter life span.

Any comments on where the 'normal' temperature should be and should I look
at another thermostat?

Thanks - Charlie
1976 TR6
