Steve---"Metallic scuffing around #1 piston"--Don't think (cold) piston
slap would be the first choice here. Sometimes you can get closer to the
cause by using a stethoscope. (They're cheap and last forever.) How far
are you planning to take down the engine? 69,000 is a little early to do
a complete rebuild, unless you like to do this sort of thing. Just
removing the head to do the guides probably won't turn up the cause of
the scuff. If you use this 'scope, listen at the water pump and timing
chain cover, during and after warmup, to see if this reveals anything.
These sounds travel and can make a monkey out anyone trying to guess the
origin.
