Dear Listers,

When driving my 74 TR6 at low speed alongside a wall, I can hear a
tick-tick-tick sound coming from the wheels. I think it's the right rear,
but not sure. This has been going on for some time.

Last year I replaced the left rear hub with a rebuilt unit, mostly because I
had a considerable amount of lateral play in the bearings. But the
tick-tick-tick continued.

Recently, after discussing this with some friends, I decided to rebuild the
brake hydraulics all-round, on the presumption that the front brake caliper
pistons were not receding into the calipers. This may very well have been
the case, since the pistons were very rusty and gunked-up with crud. I
replaced them with stainless, flushed the lines, installed new rear wheel
cylinders and master cylinder, and converted to Dot-5 brake fluid. So
everything is working wonderfully as far as the brakes go. But, I still hear
the tick-tick-tick when near a wall that bounces the sound back to my ears!

Could the bearings in the right-rear hub be doing this? I don't want to
change this unless I'm sure, because the replacement hub is expensive!

Any ideas?

Best regards/John Truttman/Santa Cruz
