I went down this road a few years ago. It was very difficult finding anything
that would shift the old veneer. Paintstripper worked in the end, with a lot
of hard work and frequent re-soakings. Someone may well know of a better
solvent.
I got quite a nice finish in the conventional way with fine sandpaper and
several coats of varnish, finally T-cutting and polishing. The effect is
pleasing but more 'woody', unlike the original which was more like a very
highly french-polished piece of furniture.
