Thanks for all the replies to yesterday's request. In the full light of day,
I crawled under the car and satisfied myself that the longitudinal steel
plate jutting out from the LH side of the engine bay towards the engine (and
which I never remembered seeing, was a later PO fitment. Chucked it over a
hedge (metaphorically) and now have plenty of space. Filter is temporarily
in situ hanging down but tilted slightly forwards to 7 o'clock. Further work
down under needs to be done to re-route fuel supply pipe to the MU and
gently 'persuade' some hydraulic pipework to nudge slightly over there.
Ahem, I have to admit a degree of surprise when water came out of the
original bowl when I took it off. No sign of milkiness in the current oil
and no visible signs of water loss elsewhere. The first engine start will
perforce be cautious. Thanks again to one and all for the collective
thinking.
