I recently experienced a problem with my OD and the ignition circuit. Every so often, without any warning my engine will stop. It had to be electical as it sometimes started right back up several mi

Is this a D-Type or J-Type Overdrive? Joe List, I recently experienced a problem with my OD and the ignition circuit. Every so often, without any warning my engine will stop. It had to be electical

I guess I should have mentioned that. It is an early Spit - 1966 that has had the OD added. I haven't looked at it but I would assume it is a D type. The switch and wiring are the same as the Vitess

Why does the OD supply wire go to the ignition coil? There should be an extra terminal on the ignition switch for it. But I doubt that it the cause of your problem. Unfortunately I can't suggest anyt

Unless, of course, somebody gets confused and connects it to the wrong terminal on the coil... Doug

If you had a high-resistance connection between the chassis and the engine block, it might be able to carry the ground current of the ignition circuit, but not the additional current of the OD circui

Thanks Doug, The problem is that is happens with the OD off. I can't remember it happening with it on, but then I don't use it a whole lot around town. I did check the engine ground and it is in good

Try disconnecting the OD wiring from the circuit and drive around a few times to see if that eliminates the problem. If it does, you will at least know that the OD wiring is coming into play. If it

Good point. The OD connection may be a red herring, and the problem may really have nothing to do with it. Doug

Exactly what I did to ensure it was the OD in the first place. When disconnected the problem does not exist. Although it does happen infrequently what made me a believer that it was the problem was w
