That " wire with a coil around it " ain't a wire at all . It's a capillary tube . I believe it was filled with alcohol . The alcohol expands when it gets hot and causes a mechanism inside the gauge

I think (but not sure) that the '78's and beyond had a wire instead of a capillary tube. Not sure how to do the swap, but since mine is also bad, I'd be interested to know how as well. adrian -- -- J

The guage in the '78 is water temp. only, hot -- cold, no temp. readings. No combo oil gauage, just an idiot light for oil pressure. I guess this was really for the American market of the late '70's

I think the answer is that all spridgets use a dual gauge (water temp oil pressure) with capilary tube. My bugeye does as does my '77 midget. Is it safe to say that the ones in between do too? Herb
