I'm a few days away from re-attaching my 1973 TR6 gearbox to the engine after replacing the clutch and related wear items. This is my first foray into such an operation and I have a question or two.

The two 3/8" bolts (actually dowels) as you stated are used for alignment of the bell housing. I have to be honest, before I switched to the Gunst bearing I never used them as alignment tools , just

The alignment pins are a much tighter fit in their holes than the bolts are. Doesn't take much misalignment to make the pilot bearing drag, nor much drag to wear out synchros faster and make it hard
