I've about had it with the lighting in my shop. I have twenty, twin tube, 8ft. florescent fixtures on two separate circuits. Many of these fixtures are connected (hardwired) together end to end, and

Not directly answering your question but directly related: Current T12(?) fluorescent tubes will become obsolete in next few years because of their mercury content and environmental disposal problem

I just discovered that the compact fluorescent bulbs I've been buying (to replace incandescent) have mercury content. What's on the horizon to replace these? - Bill Rabel Anacortes, WA

The amount of mercury in a CFL is quite small (less than 10 milligrams per bulb, typically about 4 mg). There's evidence to suggest that the mercury is bound to the glass of the bulb, reducing the ch

Wayne, perhaps I'm missing something. Why can't you just replace the ballasts with electronic ballasts ? It's not the bulbs making the noise, it's the magnetic ballasts (and whatever else they can r

To the best of my knowledge ... nothing. The amount of mercury is small (all kinds of fluorescent bulbs account for only about 1% of mercury released into the environment each year) and so far no on

Hmm, for some reason I was under the impression that the electronic ballasts required the use of the smaller twin pin bulbs? If I can use an electronic ballast with my existing single pin T12 bulbs,

I use the 4 foot shoplights. I found that they were much less expensive than the longer ones. They're also easier to transport, bulbs are easier to transport, easier to install and it's easier to spr

Home Despot had electronic ballasts for two F96T12 single-pin bulbs last time I looked. As someone else said, they weren't much cheaper than the entire fixture (maybe even a bit more than a fixture

Get the $20-25 ones for Home Depot. T8, electronic ballast, cold start down to 0F, virtually no hum. 32w bulbs give off slightly more light than the T12 40s. Cheers!
