One good reason I can think of not to put the switch near the top is because if the coolant level drops, the switch may not activate the fan at all. I don't know how various components might work in

If the knob in question is similar to the Mk.IV and 1500 Spitfire wiper switch (not to mention some of the dashboard switch knobs on the older cars), one uses a small drift/punch/piece of stiff wire/
