- When my spline went, it made a ratcheting kind of noise, not a squeak. If it does need to be replaced, common wisdom seems to be replace both the wheel and the spline or it won't last long. I figure

- Lots of 'half-fast' repairs have been tried over the years, including using an aluminum beer can as a shim between the wheel and the hub. They might get you home, but none of them work very well or
