Fred Thomas FWIW I can confirm for Australian listers that here in New South Wales it is illegal to "alter the reading on an odometer". In fact it is even illegal to "remove and replace" an odometer.

Here the relevant Act states that to remove and replace an odometer you have to apply to the 'Director-General' for written approval. I guess that would include replacing a broken speedo. As I said,
