That was exactly the case during my front end rebuild on the TR4. Before the rebuild, apparently the front end was so worn it would still turn fine. During reassembly, There no way to make it fit -

You all have me feeling ashamed. I have been using long bright yellow nylon straps to hold down the basket ... When I think about it now, does kinda tarnish the overall look and feel I was going for.

my vote is alignment, then possibily the steering box is so worn it wont drive in reverse - The few times I towed my TR2 with the homebuilt towbar (bolts to frame rails vs. bumper) the steering wheel

I had the really slow turning starter as well - one of my brush holders had a broken spring. Apparenly with one brush the starter still had a bit of power - with a totally fresh battery it would turn
