Now that my oil pump is working again, I turned my attention to the electrical system...new points, new plugs, etc. When I set the timing, the distributer clamp bolt tightened so far then just spun.

Rich, You say that your cylinder is half full, is it possible that a sudden increase/decrease in speed allowd it to tilt sufficiently to get an air lock in the system. I had a very similar experience
