The subject line refers to a choice I face on my '77 spit. It has a Crane/Allison xr-700 system in it with a 12v coil and although it runs beautifully, it takes a while to start. According to Haynes

Yes, it makes a world of difference. You either need a ballast resistor in the circuit with a 12V. Coil or an internally ballasted coil. But you do not want both. Measure the resistance of the coil t

Starting with Mk III's, Triumph went to 12 volts negative ground. To my knowledge, there has never been a 6 volt Spitfire. Using a 6 volt coil in a 12 volt system only causes excessive heating and st

I used the Crane ps20 - a hotter (higher voltage coil) that is a straight swap for the "stock" one. There's also a chrome version. Essentially I assume that both the 12v or 6v versions when wired co

FYI: The ballast resistor 'wastes' or uses up 6 volts to reduce the amount to the coil at 6 volts. A coil that doesn't require a resistor would be a 12 volt model. If the coil is listed on the outsid

I believe you may have missed the point of the 12v to 6V setup The 12v coil stock setup had 12V going to it all the time. That is ...during cranking and during normal running. The latter systems usin
