- I'd suggest checking the little rubber buttons that separate each leaf of the spring. If they are worn out, the metal rubs together, possibly squeaking. Replacements are available, or make your own.

- Also called "Nut-serts". Yes, great way to fasten licence plates, door mount mirrors (the kind intended for a sheetmetal screw), etc. Problem is, the tool is qyuite expensive, if I remember rightly.
