It smells alright. Not super bad but noticeable. Turning the mixture screw clockwise (in) does what? If I operate the valve manually with my fingers its definately flowing exhaust. It just wont hold

You were right on about the EGR system leaking. I sprayed carb cleaner on the EGR connections and sure enough the idle speed increases indicating its leaking. Apparently leaking at the EGR valve to

Rather than removing the inner door panel to hold the nuts, use sheet metal molly's instead. Often used for hanging something heavy on drywall but this type is intended for mounting into sheetmetal.
