I believe that motor oil will destroy the seals in the shocks, so best to use hydraulic oil. You could it in Santa Rosa at North Coast Hydraulics where they rebuild hydraulic jacks, so have the stuff

Before you buy a new starter . . . make sure the engine is grounded properly. On these old cars, the ground cable connections from the engine to the frame can be corroded. You can check this easily;
