I plug all the hose connections with whatever and try to pull a vacuun with a mighty-vac and make sure the vacuum hold for a few minutes. If checking for massive leaks, a wet rag works for the plug.

On the contrary, if it _is_ a synchro'd 1st, the synchro may well be the culprit. This happened to me on a T-90 and I was unable to pull it out of 2nd, engine off. Made for a fun drive home on US52.
