I don't know of the details on the TF radiator or it's mounting, but I believe that the branch pipe that you are asking about is the bypass connection. It gets closed off by the skirt on the origina

As far as the material between radiator and U-bracket, I would guess that it is only rusted and sponged steel. When dismantling my TD radiator, I believed that I would find some sort of felt, too, b
