I aligned mine using a clock guage mounted onto the top fork of the dynamo, and reading the inside face of the VD bearing hole in the front of the head. As I recall the figure to aim for is about 2

Thanks for the thought, but our J2 still has its original hinge stamped with chassis number. Other than the bonnet itself, this is one of the few bits that left the factory with it in 1932! However

In the Brown Book you'll find that the ignition warning lamp is listed as 2.5V 0.5W, however you're quite right that it will work fine with 12V and no resistor - our J2 has been like that for 30 year
