Alan, you can try turning the locking nut around so the flat part is almost flush with the end of the ball joint stud, then whack the nut and stud with a BFH. Better is to use the pickle fork, but on

Try using two hammers from opposite sides of the vertical link where tapered part of the ball joint goes through it. Hold one against one side of the link and whack the opposite side of the link with
