There is a drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox which should have a regular hex head (on my car, it is a 3/4" SAE head and it has a magnetic bit on it that collects metal shavings inside the gbox)

what type of OD do you have? If it's the J, then also drop the plate at the bottom of the OD unit, careful not to bugger the gasket. There's a wire gauze filter in there, check how clean it is, care

I think Tim's advice for removal is the way to go. I would add one thought and that is, if you go the visegrip route, keep the tool as close to the tranny as you can. That way, you may get the jaws

I purchased an eight point socket (1/2" I think) that works very well on the square head plugs. It even worked on my original rounded off plug. With eight points instead of twelve you get more flat a
