I think we check mainly for freeplay and if there is little or none we pass. 
We don't get into the proprietary design and proper usage of the various 
components. As racers we don't often check with manufacturers about what 
their product was designed for or it's limitations. Good or bad, that's 
reality.

The main problem I have seen in replacement steering shaft systems is lack of 
proper containment of the shaft. If there is more than one universal in the 
system there must be two points of support on any floating (intermediate) 
shaft. Otherwise you can get a lot of lost motion even though there is no 
backlash in the joints. One shaft can rotate around the other without 
transmitting motion to the steering box.

To answer the question: we don't make recommendations for nor deny the use of 
APEX joints.
