Mike,

I looked into a rental van or pickup before we did our longest tow ever and
our then current tow vehicle was getting tired and I knew it wouldn't make it
over the rockies. None of the companies I talked to would allow me to tow a
trailer behind their vehicle. A small moving truck might have solved the
problem, but I did 7000 miles on that trip and that would have just about paid
for the truck in mileage charges. So we bought a new tow vehicle to go to
Monterey.

One of the things discussed in that web site which many of you have missed
is renting a tow. Most only need a lightweight pickup or van to tow, and
only 3 or 4 times a year. Well, do you give up your Saab or Lexus for 365
days to have a half-mile long dually you need for 15 days?

Or do you run down to Ryder or U-Haul, rent a van or moving truck for $30 or
$40 a day, and use it for those 3 or 4 trips?

Let's see, $40 x 3 days times 4 trips = $520 per year in towing rentals.
That is less than insurance on the second (or third) vehicle you need for a
tow vehicle. It is about a payment in many cases.

Another thought is keep the nice car for the wife or you. Go out and buy a
cheap tow vehicle that sees only those 3 or 4 trips. the best deals are the
vans, usually in the $1000 or less range for a 3/4 ton cargo van, and about
as cheap for many of the old conversion vans. park it out back or wherever
you keep the trailer and pick it up for races only.

Before you all gripe about cost, I know you aren't paying $150 SCCA entry
fees, you are paying $400 - $500 member/non-member vintage racing fees, so
what is the minor price to tow? Racing vintage sure has advantages. (Don't
start me on this soapbox.)
