Speaking of the damage that can be done when something breaks: I was in an
IRL team shop today looking at the remains of an Olds engine where the small
end of a connecting rod broke. At high revs the connecting rod flailed its
way like a knife right through the block in an arc, nearly cutting the block
in half (and when the engine, a stressed member, breaks, the back end falls
on the ground).
