Perhaps others have a story to share.
So I was at a VARA race at Buttonwillow, marginally Southern California.
The tech inspector became seriously focussed on my closed wheel nuts and of
course short wheel studs.
I got a stern lecture about how the closed wheel nuts were very bad because
you couldnt see whether the nuts were pulling up on the wheel or bottoming
out on the studs, and how current SCCA rules require long studs, so if a
wheel gets loose, it had less of a chance of falling off etc etc. etc.
So I said lots of yessirs and lots of promises to fix it for next time and
made a mental note to avoid that tech next time. Hmph my closed end chrome
nuts were very pretty and I liked them just that way.
The next day, my wheel fell off.
As we were towing the car back to the pit, I passed by the tech inspector.
He looked at the missing wheel, he looked at me, our eyes met for a moment
and my already diminutive stature shrunk by a further10 inches.
I now have wheel studs long enough to take out a nearby wire wheel and I
never ever blow off a tech inspector.
Malcolm Cox, one long stud dude.
