There is a big difference between "building an engine " and "rebuilding" an
engine. Rebuilding a previously built and modified engine could take
anywhere from 20 to 40 hours depending on the condition of the engine. To
build a race engine from scratch, starting with preparing the block,
porting the head, rebuilding and blueprinting the rocker arm assembly,
checking deck hights, checking rocker arm geometry, measuring and recording
clearances, checking con rod bolt stretch, etc. can easily take over 100
hours for a 4 cyl engine like a TR-4! So it all depends on how precise and
good, (or how reliable and powerful) a job you want.
