John,
Well there is good news and bad news. Like Dave thinks, if it is the =
top cover switches, the good news is the original Lucas switches can be =
carefully disassembled, contacts cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled. =
Beware if the available replacement switches as they are usually =
garbage.
=20
I have some photos of that process.
=20
The bad news is, on a Stag that requires dropping the transmission to =
get to the switches, OR, cutting a hole in the metal transmission cover =
and making a larger plate to cover the access hole.

Yes, it switches in and out all by itself. When I then switch back to =
4th she behaves normally. I'll first check where the OD sub-harness =
meets the wiring that goes up the shift lever. In that space several =
wire bunches are scrunched together.
Thankyou Dave.

Does it switch in and out with no input from you or is it necessary for =
you to re-engage each time? If it is the former it might be something =
as simple as the adjustment of one of the interlock switches on top of =
the transmission. If it is set right at the ragged edge of actuation it =
can be switching from open to closed to open just due to the vibrations. =
Also check the wiring for a loose or poorly crimped connector. =20

Looking for some help with my 73 Stag's overdrive. After some work =
behind the dash instigated by my recovering the center console, on the =
very first drive OD would not stay engaged. After being switched on it =
would immediately begin to flip in and out, not holding OD for more than =
a second or two. Could this be a wiring issue? I'll be checking the =
switch a little later. Any other ideas? Its been working flawlessly =
since a rebuild maybe 10 years ago.=20
Many thanks
