When I had my transmission out, I added a helicoil to the top bolt and
it made things much nicer. I left the bottom as a nut and bolt because
it is so accessible. Prior to the helicoil, I just put a strip of
masking tape inside the open end wrench and jammed the nut in the
wrench. This held the nut well enough to get the top bolt it, but then
the wrench just pulled off.
A couple strips of masking tape inside a wrench or socket can be very
helpful to hold a nut in place while you get the threads started. On
a related note, I've also put a drop of super glue on a pencil eraser
and stuck on a nut. The bond is strong enough to start the nut, but
will break off when enough force is involved.
