Jim, it might be that the throttle plates in one or both of the carbs is not
fully closing allowing too much fuel to enter the intake. Try adjusting the
linkage to allow full closure of the throttle plates. Maybe allow it to idle
a bit longer too may help. My car does this as well as do a lot of TR's. As
Dave said you can also leave it in gear and let the clutch out while
shutting down.

Fresh TR4 engine that does that "dieseling" thing after you turn off the
key. It like it tries to keep running but with a cough and then stops. The
TR6 has an anti-run on valve to help with that. What do I treat on a TR4
motor? P.S. So proud that after 8 years putting my 4 back together stock,
I won first place in the sports car group at the AACC winter national.
