That is actually an excellent approach, IMO. An ordinary 2x4 will take a
huge amount of force, in compression through the shortest dimension. Build
a pyramid shape, with two lengths per layer and each layer 90 degrees to the
previous; the result will literally hold up a house.
Also a good way to extend your jackstands, if they aren't quite tall enough.
