I just got a new brake master from one of the big 3. On the side of the box
in huge lettering is a sign that reads "use of silicone fluid voids the
warrantee". What's up with that?

This borders on a religious discussion, with lots of opinions on both sides.

Personally I love DOT-5 silicone brake fluid.  Not only does it not harm
paint and not degrade over time, it helps preserve the braking system
components so they will last much longer.  With a completely new system, you
could easily go 100,000 miles without having to touch the hydraulics again.
