Often what happens on older engines is that the rocker arms wear just
where they contact the valve stem. That means that when you use the
feeler gauge, it is bridging across the groove in the rocker and your
clearance ends up greater than you think it is. You can get around
this by buying a cheap feeler gauge and snipping the blade you want
to use down the middle to make it half as wide.
