I lived in Vermont for a number of years and using a directional when  
changing lanes is (at least was then) required.  It is habit I picked up 25  
years 
ago and have never lost it. It is so automatic that should I change  lanes at 
3:00am on a dark road, I will signal.  To me it goes with  steering.
