Hmm, you're kinda all over the board on this thread with reliability and
operating costs of the cars you mentioned.
Lived with those old (now) 300 series cars. Rock solid reliable they are
not. Very prone to overheating, finicky injectors, and a transmission that
needs replacement (big bucks) every 100k or so. Rust is now quite a problem
with them.
If you really want to whine about a worthless car that's now expensive, try
to find a VW Rabbit diesel. Two years ago they were scrap metal priced.
Today, rotted out non-runners without a title bring several grand.
A Volvo 122 wagon has nothing in common with a 300TD. It is a reliable car,
with non of the bells and whistles of the Benz.
