Paul, I would ditto what the other said about your starter.  ...I would also 
add that there are places that rebuild starters who can check out your old 
one prefatory to your rebuilding it or buying a new one.  This way you'd 
have certainty that you're replacing the right part before buying it.

I don't know what it's worth, but don't I remember that you had trouble with 
installation of the starter, and that it caused your engine to freeze up? 
I'm just wondering if there is somewhat of a "hang" left in your fix to 
that, that would make the difference between turning with compression and 
turning without.
