Harry,

Early cars had two interrupter switches that allowed the overdrive to be 
engaged in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears.  Later cars only had one interrupter 
switch and engage only in 3rd and 4th gears. Your '74 TR6 should only engage 
in 3rd and 4th.
