It sounds like you've already got the later transmission. The starter bulge
should look like :

But if it looks like

then you've got a problem.
One solution to the problem is to use one of the "gear drive" replacement
starters, as they will fit in either housing and are available to fit either
flywheel.

Worse than that, the year on the paperwork frequently does not reflect the
year the car was made. My "59" TR3A was actually made in 58. There is
considerable evidence as well that the published change-over points are only
approximate.
