I have just bought what looks like a Typical TRactor motor but the
serial
number stamped next to the coil mount bracket is V669ME. What the heck
is
that? Was it from a Vangaurd or something? The SU carb set up looks just
like my 59 TR3A. Anything else I should check to provide more clues?

Sounds like an early Standard Vanguard motor -- maybe pre-1950 -- with
that low a number. How is the motor "built" otherwise? TR2 or 3 head?
Piston diameter? etc.? I seem to recall that there was a lot of
strengthening of components such as the block itself, including the
head studs and the area into which they went, as the original Vanguard
motor was developed from its roughly 68hp saloon car origins into the
90hp (and more later) sports car motor.

The gearbox has the number CT50815 stamped on the back of the clutch
shaft
boss.

I believe that would be a TR4 gearbox.

*Mrs Irrelevant: Oh, is it a jet?
*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
