As far as legal use of the bench seat, New Hampshire is still the 'live
free or die' state so I didn't think it could be that bad. From what I
found online, there is a booster seat requirement for 6 and under
(effective 1/2004) and a seat belt requirement for anyone under 18.
Looks to me like you'd be 'legal' with a seat belt for 7 and up.
You'll have to make your own choice about carrying kids (or coeds for
that matter) on your jump seat. I know there are folks on the list who
have given the question careful thought and decided not to drive kids or
grandkids in a bench seat, maybe not even in the front seat. My 6 and 8
year old boys ride buckled in either the front or back.
A bench seat probably is better than none for groceries, easier to load
and unload. I couldn't find a photo from one of my bi-monthly Costco
trips in the TR4, so I found this from a landscaping supply trip that
has nothing to do with bench seats:
