I, too, have done the white letters on knobs and even the numbers on the 
odometers using acrylic paint.  I got the kind in tubes sold at art 
supply stores or art depts in discount stores.  Easy to mix for an exact 
shade if you don't like what comes out of the tube.  Would be unsuitable 
for any area that gets wear but great for recessed numbers and designs.
