I believe that early TR4 gauges were shiny chrome, but at some point in
the TR4 run it was changed to flat black. If you've ever seen the
reflection of the setting sun at your back -- but still shining in your
eyes from the chrome trim rings -- you can understand why they'd switch
to flat black.
Or possibly it was just cheaper. ;)
