Larry:

The breather pipe has a 45 degree angle cut to the rear and the air passing
around that draft tube causes a low pressure area at the rear of the tube
pulling the air out of the engine.  Running a pipe or tube to the rear would
defeat that design.  What you have are worn rings.  A dry / wet compression
test will confirm.
