Rob, are you sure your diff has the crush washer? If your diff has the
castellated pinion nut, its probably the old style diff that used a solid
spacer. In that case, your noise is from somewhere else. Crush spacers are
found in diffs that had a nyloc pinion nut.
Hi everyone,
Well, I have 50 miles on CF28217UO since putting it back on the road a week
and a half ago after a ground up resto. There is a new sound that I don't
remember it having. At low speeds, all is good. Once I hit about 30 mph,
there is a whining from the rear end, I'm assuming the diff, that gets
louder and louder until about 50 mph when it starts to decrease. The
whining is only there when I am on the gas, when I'm coasting all is
relatively quiet.
I think I know the answer to this one as I had the pinion nut off and on 3
times trying to get a leak free pinion seal (which I finally have). I
marked the nut and flange and counted the turns, but I think I've disrupted
the crush washer.
What does consensus say about this? Are there any measurements I can make
to see what if anything is amiss in my diff?
