The proper material is called "sintered bronze", and it's a very common
material for this type of bushing. Alternate names are "Oil-lite" (which
was an old brand name) and SAE 841 Bronze. I'm very surprised that your
machine shop didn't know that. Modern bushings are delivered already
impregnated with oil, but it certainly won't hurt to soak them again.
